“The righteous man will flourish like the palm tree, He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Planted in the house of Yahweh, They will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still yield fruit in old age; They shall be rich and fresh,”
(Psalm 92:12–14 LSB)
This old tree sits right outside of my office. Over the past month we have spent a lot of time outside under the shade that this pine tree brings. I was thinking today about all of the different changes that happened since this tree was a seed. This tree has lasted through wars, presidents, economic unrest, 9/11, covid, and the list goes on and on.
Throughout the life of this tree, our church has undergone many changes. Yet, as we prepared for homecoming, one constant remains through every photo across the decades: this towering pine. Pastors have come and gone, faithful members have come and gone, but the tree still stands.
The growth of this tree throughout the years, its strength and its longevity, mirrors the life and the character of the righteous. This tree reminds me of God's provision and His call to perseverance. Whatever our circumstances, God is in control.
When I look at this tree, I think of the faithful saints who have gone before us. Those whose lives mirrored this tree. Throughout the years, God has been faithful to see them through thick and thin. They grew in sanctification as the Holy Spirit transformed them into the likeness of The Son.
Those who have believed on the Lord Jesus have been truly transplanted, placed in the courts of the presence of God. We grow as this tree grows, rooted in the protection and the security of the Lord. We flourish because of where He has planted us. Is there evidence of this transformation in your life? I pray that it is so!
Keep on,
