On December 29, 1876 a train carrying 160 souls was passing over the Ashtabula Bridge and the bridge collapsed. One of the men on that train was Phillip P. Bliss. He survived the initial fall and escaped, but his wife Lucy was trapped. Bliss went back into the burning train and stated his final words, "If I cannot save her, I will perish with her". Phillip and his wife Lucy both perished. He was 38 years old.
Bliss's luggage was found in the rubble and it contained within it the words to a song he had just written, "I Will Sing of My Redeemer". A year later, James McGranahan added music to this wonderful hymn that has been sung over generations in the church. This wonderful hymn is a reminder of God's goodness and the gratitude we ought to show.
As we prepare for Thanksgiving, it my hope that we will sing of our Redeemer. We will sing of His wondrous love and His atoning sacrifice on the cross. We will tell of His love and mercy and how He saved us from our sin. We will praise Him for His victory over sin, death, and hell. We will worship Him for bringing us from death to life!
Keep on!
