Do you have good reason to be angry? This past Sunday we looked at Jonah’s response to the Lord’s mercy on the people of Nineveh. What should have been a celebration of God’s goodness and mercy was miserable for Jonah. He was angry with the Lord for showing the wicked Assyrians the same mercy that he had received. Ironic isn’t it?

Bitterness will steal your joy 100% of the time. Bitterness will blind you to all the good things that God is doing in your midst. Bitterness will make you a miserable person. Jonah had so much to be thankful for. God saved His life from literal death, God restored him to his prophetic call, and God allowed him to witness a very violent and wicked city repent. In all of this, Jonah chose to be bitter and angry with the Lord.

Bitterness is a choice and it will eat you alive. Who are we to be angry with God? We are mere creatures from the dirt. If you are in Christ Jesus then you are a recipient of God’s mercy and grace. We should rejoice when lost sinners, even our enemies, come to know God. Instead of holding on to bitterness, we should rejoice in the good things that God has done. We should pray that our enemies come to know the grace and mercy of our Savior. Do you have good reason to be angry?

Keep on!
